Aseptic Meningitis Aseptic meningitis, also known as viral meningitis, is an inflammation of the meninges (thin membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord). Several types of viruses, including the polio virus, as well as fungi, mycobacteria, medications, and abscesses near the brain or spinal cord may cause the disorder. Symptoms of aseptic meningitis include, but may not be limited to, fever, headache, a stiff neck, vomiting, irritability, confusion and eyes that are sensitive to light. Most patients will recover without specific therapy within five to fourteen days. If caused by a virus, the body's defenses will usually cure aseptic meningitis. If caused by fungi, a doctor may prescribe an antifungal drug. Good handwashing, immunization and other "good health" measures may reduce the risk of developing an infection that can progress to meningitis.
