Chondroitin

Chondroitin sulfate is a popular over-the-counter supplement used to treat the symptoms of arthritis. Unlike a drug, chondroitin consists of natural ingredients, namely cow cartilage. Since chondroitin is a naturally occurring substance, it is not regulated by the FDA.
Recently, some experts have questioned the safety of chondroitin in light of the widespread concern over mad cow disease. These chondroitin critics claim that since the supplement is unregulated the source of the cattle used to produce chondroitin is unknown. The fear is that chondroitin manufacturers may use cartilage from European cattle, many of which are afflicted with mad cow disease. Mad cow disease may manifest itself in humans as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a degenerative and often fatal illness.

See your doctor if you are concerned about Chondroitin use.
